Another month wrapped up and the summer is ending. August has been a rainy month in the Mexican Pacific but a little bit calm. The number of earthquakes that have occurred really caught my attention.

This month has been good for me. I took some vacation days at the beach with my family. I've broken my home routine and I went out for concerts, shows, and cinema. It's been varied.

I developed a new app for Android + Chrome extension to track the music I listen to on YouTube Music. This small project has helped me to use Supabase for the very first time.

In work terms, I've dedicated much time to AI courses (around 15 mandatory courses) from Google and Anthropic companies. This new business model demands that we incorporate AI into our daily duties. My contract with Disney will end in September, so I will be looking for a new project.

Blog

I'm really suffering from a mental block and I haven't created many posts. At least the #100pics challenge is still active, and I've uploaded some old photos.

On the other hand, I added new pages such as /statistics, /books and the previously mentioned /100pics-2026.

I think that I've reached a point where I feel satisfied with the current state of this blog. Now I only need to create content.

I downloaded Steam, and I found some really good games to have a chill time. This month I only played a couple of them. I have a collection in /videogames where my gamer history is.

Sports

I'm almost out of volleyball: the team where I played was expelled from the tournament due to improper lineups and lately I have focused more on playing football.

The English Premier League has come back. I hope this season will be very good for my red devils.

Otro mes cumplido y el verano se está terminando. Agosto ha sido un mes algo lluvioso en el Pacífico mexicano pero medianamente tranquilo. Me llamó mucho la atención la cantidad de terremotos que han sucedido.

En lo personal, este mes ha sido bueno. Me he tomado unos días de vacaciones en la playa con mi familia. He salido de mi rutina hogareña varias veces para asistir a eventos como shows, conciertos y cine. Ha sido variado.

Algo un poco importante es que he desarrollado una app en Android + una extensión en Chrome para registrar la música que escucho en YouTube Music. Este pequeño proyecto me ha impulsado a usar Supabase por primera vez.

En el trabajo ha sido el mes de la IA, he tomado alrededor de 15 cursos obligatorios de varias compañías como Google y Anthropic. El nuevo modelo de negocio demanda que ya incorporemos estas IAs en nuestro trabajo. En septiembre se termina mi contrato con Disney, por lo que voy a buscar un nuevo proyecto.

Blog

Realmente estoy sufriendo un bloqueo mental y casi no he creado posts. Al menos el reto de los #100pics sigue activo. He subido algunas fotos que he tomado en los últimos años.

Por otra parte, agregué algunas páginas nuevas como /estadisticas, /libros y el ya mencionado reto /100pics-2026.

Creo que he llegado a un punto donde me siento satisfecho con el estilo y la funcionalidad del blog. Ahora solo tengo que llenarlo con contenido.

Por fin he vuelto a leer. Al parecer este mes me llegó la motivación de regresar a la lectura. Incluso, como lo mencioné antes, en /libros se encuentran los libros que estoy leyendo y los leídos.

Me he descargado el Steam, y me aparecieron buenos juegos para pasar el rato tranquilamente. Este mes solo he jugado un par. Al igual que con los libros, en /videojuegos se encuentra mi historial gamer.

Casi oficialmente me he retirado del voleibol: el equipo donde jugaba fue expulsado del torneo debido a alineaciones indebidas y últimamente me he concentrado más en jugar fútbol.

Ha regresado la bendita Premier League Inglesa. Espero que esta temporada sea muy buena para mis red devils.

AI made me feel guilty

Over this last couple of months, the Disney project's implementation has been "pushed" by using AI in all product development phases.

As part of these duties, they assigned us to review feature epics and validate whether acceptance criteria have been satisfied and covered by the codebase that we developed.

At the beginning, I only gave instructions to the AI, and it started to compare the epic against the codebase. However, I was proactive and developed a new skill to automate in some way these revisions and get a detailed report as an output. The process is like this:

Analyze the epic (feature), including description, acceptance criteria, user stories, bugs and comments. By using an MCP connected to Jira.
Read the codebase and identify previous analysis and create a relationship with classes, functions and variables.
Detect discrepancies between the code and acceptance criteria; this will generate a table with risks found including suggestions to solve them.
Generate unit tests to "cover" the feature's behavior.
Create a manual testing strategy and verify use cases work properly in a checklist mode. Developers have to do manual tests (QA people usually do it).
Generate a report where feature risks are highlighted with code blocks, suggestions for possible solutions, unit testing code, manual testing checklist and conclusions.

Unfortunately the technical leader realized this skill's potential to be used in all teams. I had a videocall with him and I explained how it works and how to use it. The conversation ended with a moralistic flavor, we deduced this skill will help us a lot to ensure that the feature works correctly. However, this skill can replace the QA workflow and possibly a person.

This small process escalated to the software architects and executives, who gave the green light to be used in all teams. I felt a strange sensation, like waiting for some significant bad news.

A couple of weeks later we heard about a considerable layoff in the project – we never confirmed if that was directly related to the AI skill, but in my head the dates match well – among devs, managers and QA testers (including the QA leader). In that moment I felt so guilty about what I did, not entirely, but I felt I had a big responsibility in that layoff.

I talked about this with my therapist, and I mentioned that I felt like an executioner and guilty about what happened. From his perspective, he told me that I did have a small portion of responsibility. However, my role was to prepare and sharpen the axe. The software architects and executives gave the order as judges. And the technical leader was actually the executioner.

This analogy gave me relief and helped me see past the guilt I'd generated for myself about what happened. If I had refused to do that work, someone else surely would have done it, and perhaps my head would have been cut off in that layoff.

I've read some comments saying that AI, in its current state, doesn't replace employees, but based on what I experienced it's definitely making significant strides.

La IA me hizo sentir culpable

En este último par de meses, la implementación del proyecto de Disney ha sido "impulsada" mediante el uso de la IA en todas las fases del desarrollo de producto.

Dentro de las actividades, nos dieron la encomienda de revisar las épicas de las features y verificar si los criterios de aceptación han sido satisfechos y cubiertos dentro del código que hemos implementado.

Al principio solo era dar instrucciones a la IA y ella comenzaba a comparar la épica con el código. Sin embargo, tuve la idea de ir más allá y desarrollé una skill (habilidad) para automatizar de alguna forma estas revisiones y así obtener un reporte como entregable. El proceso era algo parecido a esto:

Analizar la épica (feature), incluyendo descripción, criterios de aceptación, historias de usuario, bugs y comentarios. Usando un MCP conectado a Jira.
Leer el código base e identificar lo encontrado en Jira y relacionarlo con clases, funciones y variables.
Detectar discrepancias entre el código y los criterios de aceptación; esto genera una tabla con los riesgos encontrados e incluye sugerencias para cubrirlos.
Generar tests unitarios para "blindar" el comportamiento de la feature.
Crear una estrategia de tests manuales y verificar que los casos de uso funcionen correctamente en modo de checklist. Esto lo tiene que hacer el desarrollador (es algo parecido a lo que hacen las personas de QA).
Generar un reporte donde se señalen los riesgos dentro de las features, con bloques de código de posibles soluciones, código de los tests unitarios, el checklist del test manual y conclusiones.

Desafortunadamente el líder técnico se dio cuenta del potencial de esta skill para usarse en todos los equipos. Tuve una videollamada con él y le expliqué cómo funcionaba y cómo usarlo. La conversación se fue al lado moralista y dedujimos que esto nos ayudaría mucho a asegurar que la feature funcione correctamente. Sin embargo, esto podría reemplazar el flujo de QA y posiblemente a una persona.

Este pequeño proceso escaló hacia los arquitectos de software y directivos, quienes dieron luz verde para usarse en todos los equipos. Sentí una sensación extraña, como esperando a que alguna mala noticia significativa no tardara en anunciarse.

Un par de semanas después nos enteramos de que habría un recorte considerablemente grande en el proyecto —nunca nos confirmaron si tenía relación directa con la skill, pero en mi cabeza las fechas cuadraban demasiado bien—, entre ellos desarrolladores, managers y los testers de QA (incluyendo a la líder). Aquí me sentí culpable de lo que hice, no totalmente, pero sí sentía que yo tenía gran culpa de este recorte.

Hablando sobre esto con el psicólogo, le mencioné que me sentía como un verdugo y culpable de lo sucedido. Desde su perspectiva me dijo que sí tenía una pequeña responsabilidad de esto. Sin embargo, mi papel fue el de preparar y afilar el hacha. Se podría decir que los arquitectos junto con los directivos fueron los jueces que dieron la orden de ejecución. Y el líder técnico fue el verdugo, el ejecutor.

Esa analogía me dio un gran alivio y me ayudó a ver más allá de la culpa que me había autogenerado por lo sucedido. Si yo me hubiese negado a hacer este trabajo, seguramente alguien más lo haría y mi cabeza sería la que rodaría dentro de ese gran despido.

He leído algunos comentarios de que el estado actual de la IA no reemplaza a los trabajadores, pero por lo que acabo de vivir creo que sí está dando pasos fuertes.

Lo que nos dejó el Mundial de Futbol

Este verano se celebró la Copa Mundial de Fútbol en México, Estados Unidos y Canadá. La final se jugó el pasado domingo 19 de julio, donde España fue campeona venciendo a Argentina por el marcador de 1 a 0. Vi el partido por la TV y España tuvo un aplastante control del balón sobre Argentina; las estadísticas no mienten. Siento que fueron justos ganadores y debió haber sido un marcador más amplio. No hablaré sobre la final, que por cierto el show de medio tiempo me pareció horrible.

Varios partidos se disputaron en la Ciudad de México, Monterrey y mi bella Guadalajara. Tuve la fortuna de ir a uno de estos partidos en la etapa de playoffs, el partido fue entre Nueva Caledonia y Jamaica. Nunca esperé que el ambiente dentro del estadio fuera tan agradable a pesar de que no son selecciones relevantes, la afición increíblemente llenó el estadio Guadalajara. Y esta atmósfera y apoyo de la gente se vio reflejada en todos los partidos que se jugaron en México.

Un gran acierto de los gobiernos estatales fue habilitar los espacios públicos para el fan fest. Estos lugares fueron el ambiente idóneo para las muchas personas que no consiguieron boleto para asistir al estadio (carísimos por cierto). Noté que había muchos extranjeros de distintos países celebrando, sufriendo y disfrutando esta experiencia.

Algunas celebraciones estuvieron al límite de las leyes y otras pocas se salieron de control. En los primeros partidos, la organización de estos fan fest fue rebasada por la cantidad de personas que acudieron, sobre todo cuando jugó la selección mexicana, y peor fue cuando se ganaron esos partidos; la organización desapareció.

Hubo de todo: cánticos, festejos, cervezas, actividades, disfraces, personas arrojando en el aire a otras personas, torres hechas con vasos de cervezas, felicidad, enojo, malentendidos, discusiones, peleas, ganadores y perdedores. Una experiencia completa.

Las tres sedes de México fueron de las mejores en cuanto hospitalidad, apoyo y ambiente futbolero. Tristemente solo se jugaron 13 partidos de 104 (5 en Ciudad de México, 4 en Monterrey y 4 en Guadalajara), y aún así la gente respondió de manera eufórica como en una fiesta. Esto me da una pequeña esperanza de que México pueda hospedar otra Copa Mundial en solitario, como en 1970 o 1986.

Hablemos del equipo, de la selección mexicana. Creo que esta vez (desde Francia 1998) ha sido la mayor ilusión de ver este equipo en cuartos de final (nunca lo he visto) y muchas personas lo sintieron de esa manera. Como resultado de eso, se creó la famosa frase: Y si sí?

Lamentablemente no se consiguió y perdimos contra Inglaterra (quienes se quedaron con la medalla de bronce) en uno de los mejores partidos del campeonato. Honestamente dolió mucho ver esa derrota.

Aún así, disfruté mucho de ver tantos partidos. Aunque muchas veces lo bueno llega a su fin y muy probablemente ya no vea a jugadores top que vi desde adolescente. Por ejemplo Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Modric, Dzeko, Salah, De Bruyne, Courtois, Manuel Neuer, Guillermo Ochoa, Neymar, Casemiro, N'Golo Kanté, entre otros se retirarán y la lista podría crecer aún más antes de la siguiente Copa Mundial en 2030.

Por último quiero decir que ha sido una de las mejores Copas Mundiales que he vivido, quizás sea la favorita por el hecho de celebrarse en mi país y por haber tenido la oportunidad de asistir. Espero que la siguiente sea mejor y que también tenga la oportunidad de ver un partido en el estadio, lo que implicaría saltar el charco (España, Portugal y Marruecos). Confío en que el "y si sí?" se convierta en realidad.

What the World Cup left behind

The World Cup was held this summer in Mexico, the United States and Canada. The final was played last Sunday, July 19th, where Spain was crowned champion, defeating Argentina with a score of 1-0. I watched the match on TV and Spain dominated ball possession for most of the game; the statistics don't lie. I think they were fair winners and the score should have been wider. I won't talk about the final itself — the halftime show was horrible, in my opinion.

Some matches were played in Mexico City, Monterrey and my beautiful Guadalajara. I had the opportunity to go to one of those matches in the playoff stage - New Caledonia vs. Jamaica. I never expected the atmosphere inside the stadium to be that good, but it was really nice; even though those teams aren't too well-known, the fans somehow filled the Guadalajara stadium. And that energy and support were reflected in all the matches played in Mexico.

A great move by state governments was enabling public spaces for fan fest. These spots were the ideal atmosphere for a lot of people who didn't get game tickets (too expensive by the way). I noted there were many foreigners from different countries celebrating, suffering and enjoying this experience.

Some celebrations were at the edge of what's legal and other ones went out of control. In the first games, fan fest's organization was overwhelmed by the amount of people who showed up, and more when Mexico team played, and it went worse when the team won those matches; the organization disappeared.

It was everything: chants, celebrations, beers, activities, costumes, people throwing other people into the air, towers made of beer cups, happiness, anger, misunderstandings, discussions, fights, winners and losers. A complete experience.

The three Mexico cities were the best in terms of hospitality, support and football atmosphere. Sadly, only 13 football matches were played of 104 (5 in Mexico City, 4 in Monterrey and 4 in Guadalajara), and even under those conditions the people responded euphorically like a big party. This gives me a small hope that Mexico could host another World Cup, like in 1970 or 1986.

Let's talk about Mexico team. I think this time (since France, 1998) has been the biggest illusion to see this team in quarterfinals (I've never seen it before) and many people felt the same way. As a result, the popular phrase: "y si sí?" was created.

Unfortunately, we didn't reach that next phase and we lost against England team (who went on to win the bronze medal) in one of the best matches of the tournament. Honestly, it hurt a lot to see that defeat.

Even so, I really enjoyed watching many matches. Although many times all good things must come to an end and probably I won't see top players playing in other World Cup (2030). For example Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Modric, Dzeko, Salah, De Bruyne, Courtois, Manuel Neuer, Guillermo Ochoa, Neymar, Casemiro, Ngolo Kanté and many others will retire and that list could grow even further.

Last thing, I wanna say that it has been one of the best World Cups that I've lived, maybe the favorite one because it was held in my country and for getting to attend. I hope the next will be better and getting to watch one match in the stadium, which would involve crossing the Atlantic ocean (Spain, Portugal and Morocco). I trust in "y si sí?" will come true.
