Multilinguism in a global web

In case you didn’t know, I’m from Mexico, and Spanish is my mother tongue. Nevertheless, my first interaction with the English language was when I was 3 years old in kindergarten. On the wall of the classroom, there were some posters with images of objects and their names in Spanish and English. I learned blue = azul, pen = lápiz, one = uno, and apple = manzana.

Later, my family and I went to the beach. While my dad was driving a Tsuru II, the stereo was playing a Pink Floyd cassette. I remember hearing some children singing the chorus of the song “Another Brick in the Wall.”

Some years later, my parents gave me a PlayStation, and the first games I played were Syphon Filter, Kingsley Adventure, and Medievil. I remember having an English-Spanish dictionary next to me to translate the game’s conversations and missions.

Now I realize that since I was a child, I’ve spent a significant amount of time interacting with English. My journey has led me to where I am now: updating my blog and redacting this post in both English and Spanish.

It’s good to see and remember the steps you’ve taken in your life, right? Where did it take you?

Why did I decide to use English as the main tongue in this blog?

Well, before starting this blog project, I intended to publish it entirely in Spanish; however, English is already a global language that many people know and use. In addition, the majority of the content on the internet is in English. This is an excellent opportunity to improve my written communication.

The use of multiple languages on a website allows information or messages to reach a large number of people. Perhaps the language barrier will be reduced even further in the future as AI and translation tools improve in precision.

Recently, I’ve been practicing Italian. The grammar and phonetics are fairly similar to Spanish. Both languages have similar words with the same meaning. Someday, you’ll see a post in Italian in this blog.

It’s always great to read blogs written in different languages. There’s an excellent way to learn or reinforce a new language.
